The School is seeking an outstanding scholar in Information Studies who will join our team seeing herself/himself assuming a leadership position as Director of the School for a minimum 3-year term, either on appointment or within a year following initial appointment to the faculty. The start date of the appointment will be July 1, 2017 (or September 1, 2017), and the salary will be commensurate with the rank and in accordance with the Collective Agreement of the Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa. Experience/Qualifications/Knowledge/SkillsFor this position, the candidates must: - hold a Ph.D. in Information Studies or a related field; - have a strong record of successful and strategic academic leadership; - have an excellent record of research (funding, awards, prizes) and publications, with emphasis on interdisciplinary projects, and collaborations; - have solid experience in graduate teaching and service; and - be capable of functioning effectively in a bilingual (French and English) environment. An ML/IS (or equivalent) and/or relevant professional experience, and the ability to teach in both English and French will be considered assets. Candidates are expected to have a demonstrated program of research and experience focused in any of the following areas: knowledge organization; data mining and digital corpus analysis; information management; information behavior and human interaction; digital curation in humanities disciplines. Theoretical and methodical approaches to research should be commensurate with applicants’ teaching and fields of expertise. She or he will have demonstrated leadership in her/his field, a strong record of research funding, strengths in mentorship, and a commitment to fostering a collaborative environment with students, colleagues, and community members. Supplemental InformationÉSIS is the first bilingual (French / English) school of information studies in North America and received full ALA Accreditation in 2014, just five years after its inception. The four full-time faculty are complemented by eight cross-appointed professors drawn from a variety of academic units within the University of Ottawa (law, translation, and communication), and five adjunct professors appointed from the professional community. Under the leadership of a new Dean (2015), the Faculty of Arts is launching a strategic planning process with the long-term aims of increasing its visibility, differentiating itself and strengthening programs. ÉSIS will contribute by reflecting on its own progress to date and by articulating its strategic goals and objectives for the next planning period. This year the Faculty of Arts also launched a bilingual digital humanities (DH) undergraduate minor. ÉSIS is well positioned to play a leading role in expanding this DH specialization. ÉSIS offers a Master of Information Studies (MIS) and a Graduate Diploma in Information Studies (GDIS), through a program that is integrally connected to the pulse and trends of the leading knowledge centres and employers in the National Capital Region: Library and Archives Canada, the Library of Parliament, the National Science Library, the national museums and galleries, two major public library systems (Ottawa and Gatineau), three university libraries (uOttawa, Carleton and Université du Québec en Outaouais), as well as a wide range of information-based government departments, NGOs and private-sector organizations. Since 2015, the University of Ottawa and Library and Archives Canada have collaborated through a formal strategic partnership. The school also plays an active role in delivering the interdisciplinary Electronic Business Technologies Master’s and Doctoral programs (in collaboration with the Telfer School of Management and the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science). The MIS degree is now also offered with a specialization in Science, Society and Policy (in collaboration with the Institute for Science, Society and Policy). The faculty’s research profile currently includes but is not limited to information policy, open access, information extraction in scientific data, digital preservation, organizational learning and information practices.
