The ALISE Academy: Leading from Where You Are

The ALISE Academy is a half-day pre-conference professional development opportunity. The 2012 year’s pre-conference will address the leadership development needs of members in three critical areas: teaching leadership, leadership for professionals, and leadership as a career choice.

 

Overall Structure:

The 2011 Academy will be conducted as three concurrent workshops, with up to 30 participants in each workshop.

Each workshop will be designed to be interactive, engaging, and supportive of the career trajectories, and scholarly and professional perspectives of participants.

Pre-registration is required.

 

Academy Workshops


1: Leading from the Classroom: Teaching Leadership

Workshop leader: Peter Hernon, Simmons College

Target audience: Faculty at every career level who are primarily interested in teaching methods and curriculum design.

Topics: How can I develop new leaders?
Exchange ideas with faculty who have developed curriculum and courses with the goal of empowering leadership in students.


2: . Leading from Where You Are: Modeling Leadership

Workshop leader: John Bertot, University of Maryland

Target audience: Faculty at every career level who are interested in leadership, but not administrative positions.

 

Topics: How can I lead from my faculty position?

Discuss opportunities and strategies for leadership that reflects teaching, research, and service roles with other faculty who have assumed leadership roles in the profession and in the academy.


3. Leading from Administration: Choosing Leadership

Workshop leaders: Elizabeth Aversa, University of Alabama, and Cecilia Brown, University of Oklahoma.

Target audience: Faculty who are considering administration and administrators who want to develop new leaders.

Topics Do I want to assume a formal leadership role in administration?

Share ideas about the benefits and challenges of administration and how to prepare for an administrative role with an experienced dean and a newly appointed director.

 

Registration:

To participate in the 2012 ALISE Academy, you must register using the 2012 Conference registration form.  There are no fees to attend the Academy, but you must register for the ALISE Conference.  If you would like to only attend the Academy, please feel free to use the one-day rate when registering.

There are only 30 spaces available in each workshop.  Spaces are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Waiting lists are NOT maintained.
