2021 ALISE Conference

Sue AlmanDr. Susan Alman is the ALISE 2021 Conference co-chair. She has served on the library and information science faculty at the University of Michigan and University of Pittsburgh, and currently she is a member of the faculty at the San José State University School of Information. Her interest in emerging technologies led her to develop a course, The Emerging Future: Technology Issues and Trends, that focuses on resilience. Dr Alman holds PhD and MLIS degrees from the University of Pittsburgh.   Dr. KiKim Thompsonm Thompson is co-chair of the ALISE 2021 conference. She is a professor in the School of Information Science and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for the College of Information and Communications at the University of South Carolina.

 

2021 ALISE Conference Proceedings

Yunseon Choi

Dr. Yunseon Choi is co-chair of the ALISE Conference Proceedings. She is an Assistant Professor at Valdosta State University. Dr Choi earned her PhD from the University of Illinois. Her research interests encompass diverse aspects of knowledge organization, including analyzing big data in social media, metadata, ontologies, and linked data. Her work has appeared in various scholarly journals, including JASIS&T, The Library Quarterly, and Knowledge Organization, as well as popular outlets like ALISE, ASIS&T, iConference, and JCDL.

 

Meghan HarperDr. Meghan Harper is the Interim Director of the School of Information at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. Dr Harper has served as the graduate coordinator of the Masters of Library and Information Science program, and coordinator of the K-12 School Library program and has taught courses in the area of youth services. Dr. Harper is the director of the Virginia Hamilton Multicultural Literature Conference, the longest running national conference of its kind.

 

2021 ALISE Juried Papers

Abebe Rorissa

Dr. Abebe Rorissa is Associate Professor & Associate Dean for Faculty Development, College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity, University at Albany. Prior to his current position, he worked in Ethiopia, Lesotho, and Namibia as a lecturer and practitioner. He has also consulted for academic institutions, national governments, and international organizations. He has published extensively in leading journals such as JASIS&T, Information Processing & Management, and Government Information Quarterly. He was a member of the Board of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) and its Executive Committee.

 

Lisa HusseyDr. Lisa Hussey is the co-chair of the Juried Proposals and the Chair of the International Library Education SIG. She has been on the faculty at the School of Library and Information Science at Simmons University for 13 years. Dr Hussey teaches courses on Management and Leadership, User Services and Information Resources, Readers’ Advisory, Information Ethics, International & Comparative LIS, and Foundations of LIS. Her research interests include mentoring and identity in LIS, diversity and white privilege in LIS, management, and international & comparative LIS.

 

2021 ALISE Academy

Africa Hands

Dr. Africa S. Hands is co-chair of the ALISE Academy for the 2021 conference. She is an Assistant Professor of library science at East Carolina University. Dr Hands's current research agenda examines public libraries as an information resource to college bound patrons. This work stems from her experiences working in both higher education (admissions and academic advising) and public libraries. Her research also explores the experiences of first-generation students - both as users of academic libraries and as students and professionals in the LIS field. She is the author of Successfully Serving the College Bound (ALA Editions, 2015).

 
  Renee Hill

Dr. Renee F. Hill is Principal Lecturer, Diversity and Inclusion Officer, and Equity Administrator at the University of Maryland’s College of Information Studies. In this capacity, she teaches courses and provides guidance that prepare graduate students to become excellent information specialists.  

Renee earned a Bachelor's degree in Exceptional Student Education at Florida Atlantic University. Both her Master's and PhD were earned in Library and Information Studies at Florida State University. Renee is passionate about and committed to researching and teaching about issues that involve examining methods for increasing understanding of diversity issues in Library and Information Studies. Her research focuses on examining information needs and information access as they relate to diverse populations (e.g., members of various racial/ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities).

 

2021 ALISE Juried Panels

Ina Fourie

Dr. Ina Fourie is co-chair for the panel sessions. She is a Full Professor and Head of the Department of Information Science at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. She holds a doctorate in Information Science, and a post-graduate diploma in tertiary education. Her research focus includes information behaviour, information literacy, information services, and current awareness services. Currently she mostly focuses on affect and emotion and palliative care including work on cancer, pain and autoethnography, as well as participatory design.

 

Karen SnowDr. Karen Snow is co-chair for the panel sessions. Dr Snow is an Associate Professor and the Ph.D. Program Director in the School of Information Studies at Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois.  She teaches face-to-face and online in the areas of cataloging, classification, and metadata.  Her main areas of research interest are cataloging quality, ethics, and education.

 

 

2021 ALISE Jean Tague-Sutcliffe Doctoral Student Poster Competition

Laura Saunders

Dr. Laura Saunders is an Associate Professor at Simmons University School of Library and Information Science where she teaches and conducts research in the areas of reference, instruction, information literacy, and intellectual freedom. Her most recent books include Reference and Information Services: An Introduction, 6th edition, co-edited with Melissa Wong and the open access textbook Instruction in Libraries and Information Settings: An Introduction, co-authored with Melissa Wong.

 
 

Michele VillagranDr. Michele A. L. Villagran is an Assistant Professor with San José State University School of Information and has over 25 years of experience in the public and private sectors. Dr Villagran’s research focuses on diversity and social justice in library and information science and cultural intelligence phenomena within libraries. She earned her Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership with her dissertation focusing on cultural intelligence in 2015 with Pepperdine University. She also completed her Masters of Dispute Resolution and Certificate of Dispute Resolution with Pepperdine. At the University of North Texas, Dr. Villagran completed her MLS degree in Legal Informatics and her MBA in Strategic Management. Dr Villagran also serves as CEO of CulturalCo LLC consulting in areas of cultural competence, diversity & inclusion, and conflict mitigation.

 

2021 ALISE Works In Progress Poster Session

Rebekah Willson

Dr. Rebekah (Becky) Willson is the Works in Progress Poster Co-Chair for ALISE 2021. Dr Willson is an assistant professor at the School of Information Studies at McGill University (Montréal, Canada). Before coming to McGill, Dr Willson was a Lecturer in Information Science in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK. In 2016 she obtained her PhD from Charles Sturt University in Australia. Dr Willson’s research is in the field of information behaviour, particularly focusing on the information behaviour of individuals who are undergoing transitions and living with uncertainty. Dr Willson is the Immediate Past Chair of SIG-USE (ASIS&T’s Special Interest Group for Information Use, Seeking, and Needs), the Vice-Chair of the ASIS&T Research Engagement Committee, and an editor for JASIS&T.

 

Sarah BarriageDr. Sarah Barriage is one of the ALISE 2021 Works in Progress Poster co-chairs. Dr Barriage is an Assistant Professor in the School of Information Science at the University of Kentucky. She completed her PhD in Communication, Information, and Library Studies in the School of Communication & Information at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Her research interests include the information practices of children and youth, social justice in information institutions, and the development and use of child-centered research methods.

The ALISE Conference Program Planning Committee co-chairs of panels, papers, & posters will explain the format for submission or proposals and the evaluative criteria that will be used. The 60-minute webinar will include the track co-chair presentations and questions from the audience.
