Job and salary negotiations are important components of professional life for which many feel ill prepared. The upheaval of the COVID-19 pandemic changed many norms in our professional environment, especially for many in the library and information science profession given the technological, demographic and societal changes. Is remote work an option for LIS professionals? How do we understand our worth in the job market? These questions (and others) will be discussed with a panel of leaders from the information profession.

Presenter Bios:

Sanda Erdelez is a Professor and Interim Dean at Simmons University College of Organizational, Computational and Information Sciences. She is also the current chair of the iSchool Organization.  Prior to that she was the director of Simmons School of Library and Information Science. She received her LL.B. and LL.M degrees from the University of Osijek Law School (Croatia) and Ph.D. in information transfer from Syracuse University. She was also a faculty member at the University of Missouri, University of Texas at Austin and University of Osijek. Dr. Erdelez is a former Fulbright Scholar and recipient of The Texas Excellence Teaching Award and The ALISE Pratt-Severn Faculty Innovation Award. She has been internationally recognized for her pioneering research in the areas of information encountering within the field of human information behavior. Her research has received funding from both corporate and government sources including Dell Inc., SBC Communication, Texas State Government, and NSF. In 2015, Dr. Erdelez received the Outstanding Contribution to Information Behavior Research Award from SIG USE and also became a member of the SIG USE Academy of Fellows.

Heidi Julien is a Professor in the Department of Information Science at the University at Buffalo (State University of New York) and a Research Associate at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. She earned her PhD in information science from the University of Western Ontario, Canada. Heidi conducts research on digital literacy, information behavior, and research methods. She has been a visiting scholar in Australia, China, New Zealand, and South Africa. Heidi is the winner of the 2020 SIG USE award for Contributions to Information Behavior, as well as the 2021 Association for Library and Information Science Education Service Award. She is a past president of the Association for Library and Information Science Education and of the Canadian Association for Information Science, and she is a Distinguished Member of the Association for Information Science and Technology. She was Director of the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alabama, and Chair of the Department of Information Science at the University at Buffalo.

Keith Marzullo is a Professor and Dean of the University of Maryland College of Information Studies. He joined the college in 2016. In this time,  the college’s size and impact has grown rapidly, including its MLIS, HCIM, Ph.D., and undergraduate programs. Prior to UMD, he was in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, where he directed the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) Program. Marzullo joined NITRD from the National Science Foundation (NSF), where he directed the Computer and Network Systems Division in the Computer & Information Science & Engineering Directorate. Prior to this, he was a faculty member at the University of California, San Diego’s Computer Science and Engineering Department from 1993, and served as the department chair from 2006–10. He received his doctorate in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. His research interests are in distributed computing, fault-tolerant computing, cybersecurity, privacy and most recently in the design and evaluation of technology for affect regulation.
