Facilitating Research in/with Non-Dominant Communities and their Archives

Presented By:

Jamie A. Lee, Associate Professor, School of Information, University of Arizona

Gillian Oliver, Associate Professor, Faculty of Information Technology, Monash University

Moderated By:

Natalie Pang, Senior Lecturer and University Librarian, National University of Singapore

Presentation Description:

Diversity has become a bit of a buzzword in academia these days. With careful and critical thought, diversity can be understood as integral to facilitating respectful research in local non-dominant communities. Diversity in research – the questions asked, the participants involved, and the participatory nature of inquiry – can have deep implications and material consequences. Is the research project developed in collaboration with non-dominant communities? Is the research project relevant to the communities involved? What will be done with the research findings to benefit participating communities? How might the research findings contribute to inclusive policies, solutions, and strategies? But while attention to diversity in research has been growing, more needs to be done. How can researchers demonstrate their thought leadership in this area?

Diversity, equity and inclusion is an important aspect of leadership across education and research. In this webinar, speakers discuss their experiences leading inclusive research projects in diverse contexts.

This webinar is part of a series of webinars associated with the 2022 ALISE Leadership Academy. Attendance at the webinars is highly encouraged, but not required to register for the 2022 Leadership Academy workshop immediately following ALISE '22.

Thank you to San Jose State University School of Information for sponsoring the 2022 Leadership Academy.
