Library and information science practitioners and scholars have recognized the importance of diversity and inclusion over the years, and introduced a number of educational initiatives and resources to support LIS educators to promote diversity and inclusion.

What are the experiences and challenges in addressing these issues in LIS, and how can we continue to ensure that these programs continue to serve emerging needs?

This 90 minute webinar brings together leading LIS educators who have been leading educational programs and initiatives to discuss their experiences, challenges and gaps, and the way forward in promoting diversity, equality and inclusion in LIS education.  

This webinar is part of a series of webinars associated with the ALISE Leadership Academy 2022. Attendance at the webinars is highly encouraged, but not required to register for the Leadership Academy.

Presenter Bios:

Berlin Loa, Assistant Professor and Knowledge River Program Manager at the University of Arizona School of Information, applies cultural and critical approaches in information science. Her research interests include creative collaboration around communities of practice; culturally inclusive heritage preservation and information science; placemaking and memory-keeper practices; and, the intersection of materiality, mythology, and cultural memory. Her work draws from an interdisciplinary approach, critical theory, and narrative inquiry.

Denice Adkins is Professor at the School of Information Science & Learning Technologies, University of Missouri, and co-editor of Journal of Education for Library & Information Science. She has been a Fulbright Scholar to Honduras, president of REFORMA (The National Association to Promote Library & Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking), secretary-treasurer of Association for Library and Information Science Education, and councilor-at-large for the American Library Association. Her research interests include public libraries, services to the Latinx community, and services for diverse library users.

Mark A. Puente is the Associate Dean for Organizational Development, Inclusion, and Diversity at the Purdue University Libraries and School of Information Studies. Previously, he served for over 11 years as the Senior Director of Diversity and Leadership Programs at the Association of Research Libraries (ARL).  At ARL, Puente directed all aspects of the Association’s diversity, equity, inclusion, and leadership development programs. At Purdue, Puente is leading the formation and implementation of an organization development strategy designed through an equity lens. Puente has designed and administered numerous programs that seek to recruit people of color into careers in academic and research libraries and archives. He has directed or has served on the faculty of numerous leadership development programs such as the ARL Leadership Fellows Program, the ARL Leadership and Career Development Program, the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries’ Leadership Fellows Program, and the Southeastern Museum Conference Leadership Institute.
