Greetings from your ALISE Board! Even though it’s summer, we’ve been working hard to transition the Association from SBI to McKenna Management, Inc. The transition will be effective October 1, but as you might imagine, there are many details to be sorted out. In addition, we’ve been planning our inaugural Leadership Academy for February 2019, organizing webinars, starting to plan our 2020 annual conference, and maintaining our focus on our strategic plan. Please remember – just because our annual conference has moved to September in 2019, doesn’t mean we don’t count on your continued membership support. Please renew your membership when it comes due – the ongoing success of your Association depends on it! You are always welcome to direct questions or concerns to any Board member. Questions about SIGs can be directed to Nicole Cooke, questions about membership can go to Cecilia Salvatore, and questions about external relations can go to Rong Tang. Beginning October 1, 2018, ALISE will transition from SBI to McKenna Management Inc. for its management services. Following a thorough search for a new firm in May and June, McKenna Management was selected. This transition was necessary for both financial and operational reasons. Special thanks to ALISE member Tom Lipinski (Milwaukee) for reviewing our contract with McKenna Management in June of this year.

The ALISE Board, on behalf of all ALISE members, would like to thank outgoing Executive Director Andrew Estep, and all the other SBI staff who supported our work over the past five years. The Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) is seeking proposals from qualified individuals and firms for the provision of professional association management services to ALISE. The following Request for Proposals (RFP) describes the areas of expertise that are sought in support of ALISE meetings, activities and administrative tasks. ALISE seeks to establish a contract with an individual or firm that is experienced in providing professional association management services. The ALISE Board will conduct an evaluation of submitted proposals and will award a contract to the individual or firm whose proposal is determined to be most advantageous to ALISE considering the evaluation factors set forth in this RFP.

The Royal United Services Institute was founded in 1831 as the ‘Naval and Military Museum and Library’. The founding patrons were the Duke of Wellington and King George IV and its members were drawn from the officer classes of the services. However, it received its royal warrant from Queen Victoria and the museum received a significant Florence Nightingale collection on deposit – now dispersed to other institutions. The history of women at RUSI, though, really begins in 1941 when the RUSI Council voted to admit women, with the caveat that they were in uniform. In 1942 the first seven women members were recorded in the RUSI Journal, speaker Jacqui Grainger will discuss who these women were and the roles they played in the history of women in the armed services. She will also ponder what the presence of women was in the collections and has begun the process of establishing a women’s studies collection and re-classifying books by and about women as she discovers them on the shelves of the library. She will give some initial responses to the material she is finding and what it says about women in military history. Learn more and register for this webinar today!

2018 Conference Wrap-Up

The 2018 Annual Conference was a huge success thanks to the tireless efforts of the conference organizers! Following an open search process, we are very pleased to announce that Dietmar Wolfram, ALISE past-president, has been selected as the ALISE Book Series editor. ALISE has signed an agreement with the Rowman & Littlefield Publishing group to co-publish the series, which is intended to be a professionally relevant, scholarly series of publications on the historic, contemporary, and future roles, values, and practices of LIS education and research. It focuses on pedagogical experimentation and innovations, research discovery and frontiers, theoretical advancement, and other related topics of interest to the ALISE community. Following an open search, the ALISE board appointed John Budd and Denice Adkins (both from University of Missouri) as co-editors of its official quarterly, refereed journal, Journal of Education for Library and Information Science (JELIS). The new co-editors will build on the success of the present editor, Peta Wellstead, and will lead in the advancement of knowledge by working with the Editorial Board and University of Toronto Press. They will work over the next months with Peta to “learn the ropes” and Peta will end her service as JELIS editor in September 2018. Sincere thanks to Linda Smith, Bharat Mehra, Keren Dali, Rong Tang, and Louise Spiteri (chair), who conducted our search for new JELIS editors.

The Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) is proud to announce that it has partnered with the internationally recognized University of Toronto Press to publish ALISE's flagship publication, the Journal of Education for Library and Information Science (JELIS), beginning with Volume 59 in 2018. Members should receive login information directly from the publisher. ALISE is also pleased to announce that JELIS will now be indexed by Scopus, the world’s largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature. 

Since 1960, JELIS has promoted scholarly inquiry in library and information science (LIS) education. The journal serves as the premier venue for the publication of research articles, reviews, and brief communications on issues relevant to LIS educators. JELIS Editor Peta Wellstead welcomes submissions from the global LIS research community that focus on curriculum and pedagogy in LIS education. Submission guidelines for authors may be found on the ALISE website. 

The Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) is seeking applications from individuals to assume the position of Editor-Designate of its official quarterly, refereed journal, Journal of Education for Library and Information Science (JELIS). The Editor will build on the success of the present editors and will lead in the advancement of knowledge by working with the Editorial Board and University of Toronto Press. The incoming Editor will have the unique opportunity to shape the literature of library and information science education. The new Editor will assume responsibilities with Issue #1, 2019. The initial term of service is three years, with the possibility of renewal. The deadline for application is January 19, 2018. I am affiliated with the University of Denver, Business School for my PhD study.

2. As a professional association, ALISE thrives as its members thrive. What do you wish the ALISE members to know about you and your contribution to the profession and association – e.g., what are your research interests, what do you bring to the profession?
Information professionals’ responsibilities have been transformed by information and communication technology (ICT) in the past few decades. In a library context, most, if not all operations are supported by information systems. My aspiration is to apply the rigors of Management of Information Systems discipline to Library and Information Science via research, teaching, and leadership. With deeper understanding of the roles information technologies play in the libraries, information professionals can maximize the impact technologies can bring to mission.
