JOB SUMMARY:
Borland Health Sciences Library at Jacksonville is a branch library of the Health Sciences Center Libraries of the George Smathers Libraries. Borland Library seeks a creative and service-oriented Clinical Librarian to provide reference and information support to faculty, students, UF staff and other health professionals. The Clinical Librarian provides support through database searching, and information resource training. This position brings information resources services directly to the point of care to facilitate effective decision making. The Clinical Librarian is responsible for serving as Library Director in the absence of the Director and providing back-up reference services to library assistants one evening a week. The position is responsible for special projects as assigned, such as collection reviews, development of web-based resources, and service evaluation. The library encourages staff participation in reaching management decisions, and, consequently, the Clinical Librarian will be asked to serve on various committees and teams. The Clinical Librarian will frequently participate in teleconferences with colleagues and must travel to the main UF campus in Gainesville, Florida at least 6 times per year. The Clinical Librarian performs scholarly research and provides services at the institutional and professional levels as related to assignment and in accordance with tenure and promotion criteria.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide reference and information services to support clinical practice, research and medical education, including translational science and evidence-based practice.
- Facilitate the integration of information resources to support diagnosis and treatment decisions through participation in a variety of clinical settings at the adjacent Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, which may include rounds and morning report.
- Serve as Library Director in the absence of the Director.
- Teach evidence-based practice theory and resources.
- Provide information resources instruction in a variety of formats.
- Provide point of need mini-clinics for faculty, students, and staff.
- Participate in planning, policy formation and decision making related to services, collections, and new technologies.
- Participate in outreach services and marketing strategies for the library.
- Participate in providing staff development opportunities for library staff.
- Provide reference backup service for library assistants staffing the information desk. Will include one evening a week.
- Collect and report statistics that document library services.
- Perform scholarly research and provide service at the institutional and professional levels as related to assignment and in accordance with tenure and promotion criteria.
- Represent the Borland library on various library and university committees, and attend meetings either via teleconference, telephone, or in person on the Gainesville campus.
- Maintain current and up-to-date knowledge of trends in libraries. Attend CE courses.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Masters Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school, or equivalent advanced degree in a health science field.
- At least 7 years of relevant professional experience including some supervisory experience.
- Expert searching skills with experience searching medical, nursing and/or other relevant clinical resources.
- Experience with group and one on one instruction.
- Experience serving a health science client population.
- Strong commitment to client-focused service.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to contribute to the profession via research, publication, presentation and service.
- Initiative, flexibility and the ability to adapt and work creatively in a rapidly changing environment.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team within a culturally diverse community.
- Knowledge of and enthusiasm for the integration of new technologies into the delivery of information services.
- Ability to work effectively with all levels of library clients, including faculty, researchers, clinicians, students, allied health personnel, administrators, and staff.
- Strong service orientation; attitude of teamwork and cooperation.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to travel to Gainesville at least 6 times a year.
Preferred:
- Membership in Academy of Health Information Professionals, or eligibility for membership.
- Undergraduate or advanced degree in a health science.
- Experience meeting the information needs of clinicians.
- Experience working in a health sciences library.

HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER LIBRARIES
The Health Science Center Libraries provide services and programs to support the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Public Health and Health Professions, and Veterinary Medicine; the McKnight Brain Institute; the University of Florida Genetics Institute; the Emerging Pathogens Institute; the Institute for Child and Health Policy; and the Institute of Aging; Shands HealthCare; the University of Florida/Shands Cancer Center; the University of Florida Physicians Clinics (12 primary and 21 specialty care); and the North Florida AHEC program. The HSC Libraries also support 52% ($291,000,000) of all campus research awards by providing up-to-date research content and information access and management support. Borland Health Sciences Library, located on the Jacksonville campus, is a branch of the Health Sciences Center Libraries.
