The Department of Library and Information Studies (LIS), at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, invites nominations and applications for the position of Professor and Department Chair, beginning August 1, 2016. We are seeking a colleague with excellent communication and leadership skills who has a demonstrated record of success in research and scholarship, professional service, external funding, effective teaching and supervision, and administrative experience commensurate with appointment as a Full Professor with tenure. This is a 10-month appointment.

Responsibilities: The Chair provides collaborative leadership in program and curriculum development through shared governance with faculty in pursuit of our mission: “connecting people, libraries, and information through research, teaching, and service to enrich living and working in a global environment.” The successful individual will lead strategic planning by articulating a shared vision with faculty, staff, students, and the library and information professional community. As part of the School of Education, the Chair represents the Department at School and University levels and in the wider community seeking relevant opportunities for outreach activities with schools, community agencies, and local colleges/universities. Regular program evaluation through various data-gathering and reporting activities will be required. Other important activities include enhancing recruitment of a diverse student body and faculty, maintaining good alumni relations, managing budgets, and arranging course schedules. The successful candidate must have the capacity to build consensus on strategic initiatives and formulate clear direction in the education of future library and information professionals. Other faculty responsibilities and research interests will be included as negotiated.

Qualifications: The department seeks an individual with evidence of collaborative, democratic leadership, administrative abilities, excellent interpersonal skills, and a strong commitment to teaching, scholarship, community engagement, inclusiveness, and support of service activities. High standards of professional integrity, scholarly initiative and academic excellence are desired. An earned doctorate in library and information science or related field is required.

The LIS Department has an enrollment of over 275 students in the MLIS program and delivers courses on-campus in Greensboro and through an active online program. The degree is accredited by ALA through 2018 and the School Library Program is nationally reviewed and recognized by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and National Council for Accreditation of Teachers (NCATE)(now the Council for Educator Preparation, CAEP). Candidates who embrace and support the ongoing creation and development of inclusive and diverse policies for the Department and the profession in terms of race, gender, culture, perspective, and academic specialty, are given high priority.

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is classified by The Carnegie Foundation as a Doctoral/High Research Activity University and has been certified as a Community-engaged Institution. With an enrollment of over 19,000 students, the university is located in the Triad area of North Carolina and is one of four doctoral-granting institutions of the seventeen-campus university system.
