School Libraries
The Department of Leadership and Educational Studies (LES) and its Library Science Graduate Program at Appalachian State University invite applications to fill one tenure-track, nine-month faculty position (assistant or associate rank), beginning Fall 2016. The Library Science Program offers coursework leading to the Master of Library Science degree, which prepares students for careers in school media centers and public libraries. The program is nationally recognized by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and is accredited by CAEP. Students who complete the program are also eligible to obtain North Carolina Public Library Certification. We seek a collaborative faculty member who subscribes to a social constructivist philosophy of teaching and learning, who is interested in working with diverse populations, and who would take an active role in shaping an evolving, dynamic program. The position involves teaching courses in the core curriculum, but principally courses related to school libraries. Teaching during the nine-month contract will primarily involve online, evening instruction, with the potential for on-campus and off-campus day and evening courses as well. There may also be summer classes available, depending on  program needs. Faculty members are expected to maintain an active program of scholarship, actively engage in service activities, and participate in advising,
curriculum development, and other academic program-related administrative activities. Additional information about the program can be found at http://mls.appstate.edu.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
● An earned doctorate in library science or a related field, and a master’s degree in library science from an accredited program. ABD will be considered, but the position requires completion of the degree program by start date
● Eligibility to earn 076 Media Coordinator licensure in North Carolina
● A record of scholarship that meets the requirements for status as Graduate Faculty (http://www.graduate.appstate.edu/facultystaff/gradfaculty/index.html).
● Commitment to diversity and social justice
● A strong record in or the potential for excellence in teaching, scholarly work, and professional service
● Willingness to actively and collaboratively engage in recruitment, program planning, and program assessment
● Willingness to teach online, off-campus hybrid, and evening classes
● Knowledge of current trends in school library media

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
● At least three years of professional experience in a school and/or public library setting.
● Willingness to teach Organization of Information, Strategic Administration of Library Resources and Services, Integrating Literature and Media into Instruction, Collaborative Media Program
Planning and Evaluation
● Knowledge and experience in technology as well as an interest in alternative instructional delivery approaches for off-campus instruction
● Experience in teaching online, off-campus hybrid, and evening classes
● Experience teaching graduate students
● Proven record of collaborative work and teaching
● Willingness and ability to assume a leadership role in the profession at the local, state and national levels
● Excellent communication skills including, verbal, written, virtual and interpersonal
● A history of successful grant writing
● Eligibility for North Carolina Public Library Certification
