Passing of Dr. Eugene Garfield

The ALISE Board extends its deepest sympathies to the family of Dr. Eugene Garfield (September 16, 1925 - February 26, 2017), who passed away on February 26th. Dr. Garfield was a pioneer in library and information science. He founded the Institute for Scientific Information, which developed important citation databases that we now know as the Web of Science. He was a leading contributor to research in scholarly communication, bibliometrics and scientometrics. Each year, ALISE honors outstanding doctoral dissertations addressing substantive issues in library and information science with the ALISE/Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Award.
